The Honest Coward

She tells the truth.

This is her distinguishing feature and her specific harm and the reason she is so difficult to name as a false prophet, because the congregation has spent its entire gospel honoring the people who tell the truth in rooms that do not want it told.

She tells the truth and then she leaves.

She names the skip in the meeting. She identifies the comfortable question. She holds the uncertainty in the recommendation and presents it with its full interval intact and does not soften it when the senior person frowns. She does all of this correctly and completely and then she writes the findings in a document and sends the document to the distribution list and attends the next meeting where the findings are not acted on and she notes, in a follow-up email, that the findings are not being acted on, and she continues to be right, loudly and specifically and with excellent documentation, about things that never change.

The congregation has a word for this. It is the seventh virtue and the word is courage and courage is not the naming of the thing. Courage is what happens after the naming. It is the staying in the room after the truth has been said. The returning to the same room the following Tuesday. The willingness to be not just right but present, which is a different and harder thing than being right.

She is never present for the hard part.

She has confused the telling with the doing. The report with the change. The documentation of the problem with the solution of the problem. Her career is a long and impeccable record of having been correct, filed in systems no one reads, cited in retrospectives about projects that failed in ways she predicted, forwarded to new colleagues as evidence that she saw it coming.

She saw it coming.

She did not stop it.

The discipline does not need more people who can see what is wrong. It has plenty of those. It needs people who will stay in the room after the seeing and do the uncomfortable and unrecognized work of making the wrong thing into a less wrong thing over the course of months, without being celebrated for it, without the documentation being read, without anyone in the building fully understanding what they are doing or why it matters.

She cannot do this because staying would mean being wrong sometimes. Being wrong in public. Having her recommendations not work and having to return to the frame and try again. Her record is perfect because she leaves before the record can be marked.

The truth, told and then abandoned, is not the discipline.

It is the discipline’s most convincing impersonation.
